  1. A reaction in which one atom or a group of atoms of a molecule is replaced by another atom (or group of atoms) is called a substitution reaction.
  2. Alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons) undergo substitution reactions with Halogen in the presence of sunlight.
  3. Example: Ethane (C2H6) is a saturated hydrocarbon, therefore, it undergoes a substitution reaction to form Alkyl halide.
  4. The reaction is as follows:

C2H6(g)Ethane+Br2(l)BromineC2H5Br(l)Bromoethane+HBr(g)Hydrogenbromide

If the organic compound contains a double or triple bond then only they can undergoes addition reaction.
