Papaya seeds and mineral oil coating are the common adulterants used in pepper. Papaya seeds can be separated out from pepper as they are shrunken, oval in shape and greenish brown or brownish black in colour. Black pepper coated with mineral oil gives a kerosene-like smell with which it can be identified. Stomach irritation, liver damage, cancer are some of the disorders that may be caused due to the adulteration.
