Question

Aforce of 10^6 /m^2 is required for breaking a material .if the density of material is 3000 kg/m^2 ,then what should be the minimum length of wire made of the same material so that it breaks by its own weight

Open in App
Solution

Weight of the wire,
W = Aldg
where A is the area,
l is the length,
d is the density,
g is accn due to gravity

Stress due to its weight,
S = W/A
S = Aldg/A
S = ldg

i.e breaking stress = ldg
l = S/dg
l = 10^6 / 3000×9.8
l = 34.01 m
