Question

After 11.2 g of carbon reacts with oxygen originally occupying 21.2 lit at 18oC and 750 torr, the cooled gases are passed thorough 3 litre of 2.5 M NaOH solution. Determine the concentration of NaOH remaining in solution which is not converted to Na2CO3.
Note : CO does not react with NaOH under these conditions.

Solution

Mole of carbon =11.212=0.933 mole
Mole of O2=PVRT=(750/760)×21.20.0821×(273+18)=0.88 moles
Step1C+O2COt=00.930.880.88t0.050.88
Step2CO+O2(temaaining)CO2t=0OO
As NOCO2 is formal
No change in comentration of NaOH
