Question

After electrolysis of a sodium chloride solution with inner electrodes for a certain period of time, 600 mL of the 1 N solution was left which was found to be NaOH. During the same time 31.80 g of Cu was deposited in copper voltameter in series with the electrolytic cell. The % yield of NaOH obtained will be: (Atomic mass of Cu = 63.6. )

Open in App
Solution

Eq. of Cu deposited =31.8(63.6/2)=1
Eq. of NaOH formed =1
or Meq. of NaOH formed =1000
However given that 600mL of 1 N NaOH is formed, i.e., experimental yield
or Meq. of NaOH=600 × 1=600
%yield 6001000×100=60%
