AIDS can be prevented by:
Not sharing needles and syringes with the infected person
∙ Sexual intercourse with an infected person is one of the ways through which HIV infection spreads. Adopting safe sex practices such as having a single sex partner and using barriers such as condoms prevent transmission of the virus from an infected person to a normal one.
∙ Blood banks and hospitals monitor the quality of blood that they receive and check for the presence of HIV in the blood.
∙ Transfusion of blood contaminated with HIV or even sharing needles with an infected person may also spread the disease. This is one of the main reasons why the use of disposable, ‘single-use only’ syringes and needles has been made mandatory in clinics, hospitals, diagnostic centres and blood banks.
