A mixture is one where substances are combined together physically and in any ratio. There is no new substance created from this mixing. So the constituents can be separated using physical methods. All the constituents of a mixture retain their properties.

Air is a mixture and not a compound because:

  • Air does not have a fixed composition. If it were a compound, it should have a fixed composition.
  • The components of air can be separated by a physical method such as fractional distillation of liquid air.
  • Oxygen in the air retains its properties, and so does nitrogen, carbon dioxide and every other gas.
