Question

Air is filled at 60C in a vessel having a open mouth. The vessel is heated to a temperature T, so that 14th part of air escapes. Assuming the volume of vessel remains constant , the value of T(in C) is

Solution

Given T1=60+273=333 K
Let
M1=M,
As 14th of air escapes,
M2=MM4=3M4
If pressure and volume of the gas remains constant, then MT= constant
T2T1=M1M2=⎜ ⎜ ⎜M3M4⎟ ⎟ ⎟=43
T2=43×T1=43×333=444 K=171C
Why this question?

Key Concept: If temperature is raised, the gas molecules start vibrating with higher amplitude and they need more space. So, to maintain pressure, the gas expands.

Caution: Use temperature in Kelvin scale.
