Question

Air is held inside a non-insulated cylinder using a piston mass (M=25kg and area A=100cm2) and stoppers (of negligible area), as shown in the figure. The initial pressure P1 and temperature T1 of air inside the cylinder are 200kPa and 4000C, respectively. The ambient pressure P and temperature T are 100kPa and 270C respectively. The temperature of the air inside the cylinder (0C) at which the piston will begin to move is (correct to two decimal places).

  1. 147.625

Solution

The correct option is A 147.625

P=100kPa

Ppiston=MgA=25×10×1030.01
Ppistion=25kPa
Total external pressure
=P+Ppistion=125kPa.
Initial pressure of air,
Pi=200kPa.
Piston will be about to come down if system pressure is equal to total pressure i.e 125 kPa. Final pressure of air at which it is about to move is Pf=125kPa
Applying mass conservation at two states i and f

mi=mf
PiVi.RTi=PfVfRTf[Vi=Vf]
PiTi=PfTf
200673=125Tf

Tf=420.625k
Tf=147.6250C
