Solution

  • Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.
  • Air is a matter because it has mass and it occupies space.

Air has mass-

  • When we put an inflated balloon on one side of the weighing balance we see the deflection in balance.
  • This experiment shows that air has mass.

Air occupies space-

  • When we put an empty bottle in a bucket filled with water we see the bubbles of air coming out of the bottle when water gets inside it.
  • The bottle which appears empty is in fact filled with air, and air has occupied that space.
  • When water gets in the air in form of bubbles come out.

Hence, by these two experiments, we see that air has mass and occupies space.

Air is matter because it has mass.
