Addiction to alcoholic drinks, or simply alcohol dependency is called alcoholism. When alcohol reaches the synaptic cleft, it binds with the GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) receptors. Now as usual when an impulse reaches the synaptic knob, GABA is released. The GABA released binds to its receptors to which alcohol is already attached. It opens up the receptor, allowing the chloride ion to enter. The attachment of alcohol to the GABA receptor causes it to remain open for a longer period of time. Thus, more chloride ions enter the neuron. The excess amount of chloride ions depolarises the neuron further and the intensity of the impulse becomes very low. This causes a feeling of depression.
