Alcohols are compounds with general formula ROH.
(a) Alcohols are soluble in water. What is the reason?
(b) (i) Explain a method for manufacture of Ethanol?
(ii) How will you convert phenol to benzene?

a) Alcohols are soluble in water due to the presence of hydroxyl group which forms hydrogen bonds with water molecule.

b) i) Ethanol is manufactured by reacting ethene with steam(water). The catalyst is solid silicon dioxide coated with phosphoric(V) acid.

CH2=CH2+H2OH3PO4CH3CH2OH

ii) Phenol is converted to benzene by heating with Zn dust.
