Carbohydrates are chemically defined as polyhydroxy aldehydes and ketones. Thus, carbohydrates have two functional groups one alcoholic group and another aldehyde or ketone group. Those carbohydrates that have aldehyde group are called aldoses and those which have a ketone group are called ketoses. Ribose is a pentose (having five carbon atoms) aldose (having aldehyde group in addition to the alcohol group) sugar. It commonly occurs in ribonucleotides and ribonucleic acid.
