Alex paid ₹4000 for a bill of ₹2300. What is the minimum number of total notes if he got the given notes in return?

To find the amount of money Alex should get back we need to perform ₹4000 - ₹2300

Using place value method,


So Alex will get back ₹1700.

The notes given have the values as shown below.

For minimum number of notes, notes of larger value should be used as much as possible.

First, we will see that how many maximum number notes of ₹500 can be used to pay ₹1700.

3 notes ₹500 will be used to get ₹1500, i.e., 3 x ₹500 = ₹1500
Then, 2 notes of ₹100 for the remaining ₹200, i.e., 2 x ₹100 = ₹200

So, a total of 5 notes (minimum number) will be given to Alex in return.
