The substances which are capable of adding oxygen to other substances are called Oxidizing agents. Alkaline KMnO4 and acidified K2Cr2O7 convert alcohols to carboxylic acids by adding oxygen. This is because, per molecule of Alkaline KMnO4 or acidified K2Cr2O7 we get more number of oxygen.
KMnO4 dissociates into K+ and MnO4 while K2Cr2O7 dissociates into 2K+ and Cr2O72.
