Alkyl halides are formed when thionyl chloride and alcohol are refluxed in pressure of pyridine.
It is one of the best methods to prepare alkyl halides as the byproducts are gaseous in nature. So they evaporate and leave behind only chloroalkanes. The reaction follows $S_{N} 2$ mechanism and is called Darzen's method.
