Question

All gases expand equally for equal rise in temperature. Why??

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

This is not true that all gases expand equally for an equal rise in temperature. This is because the gas molecules have a non-null volume and that, is the factor that depends on the gas itself, they might be forces of attraction or repulsion between the molecules.

Expansion of gases can be approximately calculated by (PV)k proportional to nT, where P is the pressure, V is the volume, n is the moles, T is the temperature and k is a constant which will depend on the gas and vary with other gases. So from the above formula, is we keep temperature constant then still one factor will depend on the gas itself, that factor is k.

Hence, all gases do not expand equally for an equal rise in temperature.
