Question

All matter is made of small indivisible particles called atoms. Atoms, however, do not have an independent existence, in general. They generally exist in combination with other atoms in the form of molecules or ions. Molecules are thus, the smallest particles of various substances (elements or compounds) which have an independent existence. The number of atoms present in one molecule is called atomicity.

Answer the following questions after reading the paragraph.

(1) Write any specific name given the molecule containing the same atoms.

(2) Name two elements whose atoms exist independently.

(3) Atomicity of a molecule of sulphuric acid is

(a) 8 (b) 7 (c) 6 (d) 4

(4) Which of the following elements exhibits the atomicity of eight?

(a) Phosphorus (b) Sulphur (c) Boron (d) Oxygen

Solution

(1) The molecule containing the same atoms is known as a Homoatomic molecule.

(2) Two elements whose atoms exist independently are helium(He) and Neon(Ne).

(3) Atomicity of a molecule of sulphuric acid is 7.

  • The atomicity of a molecule of Sulphuric acid(H2SO4) is calculated by the sum of the total number of atoms in the molecule.
  • The atomicity of a molecule of Sulphuric acid(H2SO4)= 2+1+4=7
  • So, the correct option is b

(4) Element that exhibits the atomicity of eight is sulfur.

  • Sulfur(S) exists as S8.
  • So, option b is correct.
  • Phosphorus(P) exists as P4. Hence its atomicity is 4.
  • So, option a is incorrect.
  • Boron(B) exists as B2. Hence its atomicity is 2.
  • So, option c is incorrect.
  • Oxygen(O) exists as O2. Hence its atomicity is 2.
  • So, option d is incorrect.

Therefore, option(b) is correct.
