Minerals can exist in combined state or free native state. They usually contain the element (of interest) in one of these forms. But not all minerals are ores. Only those minerals from which an element can be extracted easily and profitably is called an ore. Do note that this process has to be economically viable and also the final product should be of desirable quality. This is the reason why Iron is not generally extracted from Iron Pyrites as they tend to possess much more Sulphur content than is desirable.
