Question

All the p-cl bonds in PCl5 molecule are not equivalent. Why? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

PCl5 has a triagonal bipyramidal structure due to dsp3 hybridization. Due to this two Cl atoms lie along axial line and other three Cl-atoms lie along the equitorial plane. Hence The bond lengths are different.
