Question

All transition elements are d-block elements, but all d-block elements are not transition elements. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Elements in which last electron enters in d orbitals are known as d-block elements. All transition elements are d block elements and have unpaired d-orbital electron/s either in their ground state or in any stable excited state.

For some d-block elements like Zn, Cd, and Hg, the ground state or stable excited state lacks unpaired electron in d-orbital. So, these elements do not show most of the properties of transition element. Thus, on the basis of electronic configuration, all d block elements such as Zn, Cd and Hg are not the transition elements.
