Question

All were so happy at the idea except the rail master. He told that before it was so easy to calculate the distance between the two stations, for e.g. distance between Station (1) and Station (5) is (5 - 1) = 4 km. But with this design, how to calculate the distance between the new stations i.e. Station (-1) and Station (-4)?

Then you explained: We move in the forward direction if we add two integers and we move towards the left of the number line if we subtract two integers. Using this we can find the distance between Station (-1) and Station (-4) equal to

Solution

The correct option is B

3 km

We have to calculate (-4 - (-1)). Since, it is subtraction, we will move towards left of -4. But wait! The number we are subtracting is also negative i.e. -1. So, we will change our direction once more. Now, we have to move in towards right of -4 by 1 km. So, we reach -3. The answer of (-4 - (-1)) will hence be -3 but since we are measuring the distance, we will take it as 3km.
