Question

Aluminum is extracted from its chief ore, bauxite. The ore is first purified and then the metal is extracted from it by electrolytic reduction. Mention one reason for the use of aluminum in thermite welding.

Solution

  • AluminumAl is reactive in nature and has more affinity for OxygenO2
  • In thermite welding, aluminum powder is used along with Ferric oxide(Fe2O3).
  • Aluminum reduces Ferric oxide to elemental iron during welding and also produces a lot of heat. The molten elemental iron thus formed will seal the broken parts.
  • Due to the above reason, Aluminum is used in thermite welding.
