Aluminum $(A l)$ is reactive in nature and has more affinity for Oxygen $(O_{2})$
In thermite welding, aluminum powder is used along with Ferric oxide $({Fe}_{2} O_{3})$ .
Aluminum reduces Ferric oxide to elemental iron during welding and also produces a lot of heat. The molten elemental iron thus formed will seal the broken parts.
Due to the above reason, Aluminum is used in thermite welding.
