Take another magnet and bring it closer to the first magnet, it repels one end and attracts another end. The same magnet attracts both the ends of the iron piece.

Move a compass around the magnet and see how its needle deflects. When the same compass is moved around iron piece it does not deflect.

Amit can suspend both pieces using thread to check which one gets aligned in N-S direction. The one aligned is a magnet, the other is simply an iron piece.

Move the iron rod close to the magnet it gets attracted. The same iron rod, when moved around iron piece won't be affected.
