Ammonia is a very useful base. It is used in the production of fertilizers (ammonium and nitrate salts), in the manufacture of nitric acid, neutralizes the acid (in the petroleum industry) and prevents premature coagulation in natural / synthetic latex. Ammonia solution is used in cleaning, deodorizing and bleaching purposes. It should be used very carefully because it can attack the eyes and the skin and damage it. The vapours of ammonia are especially irritating upon prolonged exposure.
