Ammonium chloride and salt are separated by the process of sublimation. The volatile component, in this case, is ammonium chloride. Ammonium chloride is sublimable and salt is non-sublimable, therefore we use sublimation to separate them. Sublimation is the phase transition of a substance, from solid state, directly to the gaseous state without passing through the intermediate liquid state.
