Solution

  • Metals are arranged in their decreasing order of reactivity is called reactivity series.

K>Na>Ca>Mg>Al>Zn>Fe>Pb>H>Cu>Ag>Pt>Au

(a) From the reactivity series, Cu is present below hydrogen which shows less reactivity of copper.

So, Cu does not react with dilute HCl.

(b) Mg is an alkaline earth metals having a general electronic configuration ns2 that shows maximum oxidation state +2 and forms 1+and 2+ions. Other metals show different oxidation states and forms 2+ and 3+ions.

Mg(s)-2e-Mg2+

  • Na belongs to alkali metals having a general electronic configuration ns1 and forms 1+ion only.
  • Cu,FeandZn belongs to the first transition series having a general electronic configuration 3d1-104s1-2 forms+1,+2,+3,+4,+5,+6 ions.

(c) Oxides of metals react with water to give bases.

  • Among the given metals, the oxide of zinc ZnO is amphoteric in nature shows acidic and basic nature.

Zn(OH)2(s)+HCl(aq)ZnCl2(aq)+H2O(l)baseZn(OH)2(s)+KOH(aq)K2Zn(OH)4(aq)+H2O(l)lewisacid

Hence, Zn hydroxides react with both acids and alkalis.

(d) Metals Fe,Zn does not react with cold water but react with steam when heated to produce metal oxide and hydrogen given by reactivity series.
