Question

Among metals of its own group, only mercury is a liquid. Give reason.

Solution

At room temperature and at atmospheric pressure, mercury does not readily share valence electrons present in its 6s orbital with its other atoms. Mercury atoms don't interact with each other to form a structure or lattice to become a solid(Very weak metallic bond) at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
