Question

Among solids, liquids and gases, in which medium the speed of sound is the highest? What will be the speed of sound in a medium where the distance between two adjacent crest and trough of the sound wave is 0.3 m and frequency is 300 Hz.

Solution

The speed of sound is highest in solids, then in liquids and the slowest in gases.

Given:
Distance between two adjacent crest and trough = 0.3 m, Frequency = 300 Hz

Wavelenth : It is distance between two consecutive crests or troughs of a sound wave.
Wavelength = 2×0.3 = 0.6 m
Speed of sound waves = Wavelength x Frequency = 0.6 x 300 = 180 ms1
