Question

Among the following compounds, how many of them shows chirality?

Open in App
Solution

For a molecule to be chiral, it should not have a plane or centre of symmetry.
In compound (V), the molecule is symmetrical (equal two halves ) about the carbon where methyl group is attached so it becomes a achiral molecule.
Compound IV (Norborane ) is a symmetrical molecule, it has plane of symmetry so it is achiral.

Compound (I) is a even cumulene where both the sp2 carbons attached to different terminal groups. In even cumulene the terminal groups are not present in the same plane hence, it lacks both centre of symmtery and plane of symmetry. Thus, the molecule shows chirality.
Compound (II) , (III) and (VI) has chiral centres and lacks plane and centre of symmetry so they are also chiral molecule.
Hence, there are 4 chiral molecules.
