Among the human ancestors, the brain size was more than 1000 cubic centimetres (cc) in Homo neanderthalensis. Neanderthals were generally shorter and had more robust skeletons and muscular bodies than modern humans. Males averaged about 168 centimetres in height while females were slightly shorter at 156 centimetres. Brain size was larger than the average modern human brain and averaged 1500 cc. The average brain size of Homo erectus is estimated to have been roughly 900 cc, which is larger than Homo habilis. The brain capacity of Ramapithecus was about 500 cc, similar to that of an ape.
