Question

Among the various inorganic acids, like, HNO3, HClO4 and H2SO4, sulphuric acid is highly syrupy in nature. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

1.In HNO3, there exist covalent bond between H and N & coordinate covalent bond between N and O and Hydrogen bonds exist between two nitric acid molecules and also with water molecules.

2.In HClO4, there exist covalent bond between H and Cl & coordinate covalent bond between Cl and O.

3.In H2SO4, there exist covalent bond between H and S & Hydrogen bonds exist between two sulphuric acid molecules and also with water molecules.

Hence, sulphuric acid becomes viscous because of slow movement of molecules due to H-bonding.
