Question

Among V2+ and V3+ which is stable?

Open in App
Solution

the outer most electronic configuration of V is 3d^3 4s^2. the stable state of s orbital is o and 2.. when V is in its +2 oxidation state, it becomes stable since the s orbital has no electrons in it whereas when it is in the +3 oxidation state, it loses another electron maybe from the d prbital. And hence V^+2 is more stable than V^+3.
