Drugs are substances that alter the physiological and/or psychological functions in an individual when consumed. They are chemical substances obtained naturally or produced artificially. In specific doses these chemical substances have significant medicinal value, however when consumed irrationally in higher doses they can cause addiction and even be fatal.

Synthetic drugs like amphetamines, barbiturates and benzodiazepines showed a significant contribution in the field of medicine to treat various physiological and psychological disorders.

The role of amphetamines in a few disorders are

• ADHD- it stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by hyperactivity, irritability, mood swings, attention difficulties and impulsive behaviour. Amphetamines have shown to improve brain development and nerve growth in children affected by this disorder.

• Narcolepsy: a sleep disorder characterised by excessive daytime sleep. Amphetamines induce a state of alertness and have been effective in treatment of narcolepsy.

• OCD stands for obsessive compulsive disorder, a condition where the individual has excessive unreasonable thoughts that lead to fear and repetitive behaviour. Amphetamines used in OCD treatment showed improvement in obsessive symptoms.

Thus, all the disorders mentioned showed a significant improvement with the use of amphetamines.
