An 8-pole, 200 V shunt excited dc generator has a lap wound armature having 100 coils of 8 turns. The resistance of each conductor is 0.025 Ω and field winding resistance is 100 Ω. If total core and mechanical losses are 1250 W. The current at maximum efficiency is _________

For maximum efficiency,
Variable losses = Constant losses

I2aRa=Pk

Ia=PkRa...(i)

Constant losses for dc machine is
Pk=(core+mech)loss +field losses

=1250+2002100=1650W

Armature resistance (Ra) :

Conductor per path = 100×8×28=200

Resistance per path = 200×0.025Ω

Total armature resistance = 200×0.0258=0.625Ω

From equation (i), we get

Ia=16500.625=51.38A
