Question

An AC generator can be converted into DC generator by replacing its ______.

Solution

Alternating current and Direct current:

  1. As the names suggest, in alternating current, the current flowing in the loop alternates its direction, whereas, in direct current, the current flows in the same direction.

Conversion of AC generator into DC generator:

  1. In an AC generator, a slip ring is fixed at one arm of the loop, so when it turns by 180° the end becomes polar opposite to the previous direction and therefore, current flows in opposite direction.
  2. In DC generator, commutator is weakly attached to brushes and exchanges with each other after 180°, so the current continues flowing in the same direction as the net effect is canceled out.
  3. By replacing slip rings with a commutator, AC can be changed into DC.

Hence, an AC generator can be converted into a DC generator by replacing its slip rings.
