An AC source is given by V=2sin(t) V. It is connected across a diode and a resistor of resistance 2 Ω as shown in the figure below. Find the current through the circuit at t=π6 and t=5π6 respectively. Assume zero resistance of diode in forward biasing and infinite resistance in reverse biasing.

The voltage source (V) can be plotted with respect to time (t) as


At t=π6, V is in positive half cycle, and therefore, the diode is forward biased.

V=2sin(π6)=1 V

Using,

i=VR=12=0.5 A

At t=5π6, V is in negative half cycle and therefore, the diode is reverse biased.
