Question

An ac source of angular frequency ω is fed across a resistor R and a capacitor C in series. The current registered is I . If now the frequency of the source is changed to ω3 (but maintaining the same voltage), the current in the circuit is found to be halved. The ratio of the reactance to resistance at the original frequency ω is given as x5. Find x .

Solution

Step 1: Given

Current at angular frequency ω: I

Current at angular frequency ω3: I2

Reactance to resistance ratio at ω: XcR=x5

Step 2: Formula Used

Xc=1Cω

I=VR2+Xc2

Step 3: Calculate the value of x

Find the capacitive reactance at ω3 by using the formula.

Xc''=1Cω3=3Cω=31Cω=3Xc

Equate the current equations and substitute the values in the formula.

I''=I2VR2+3Xc2=V2R2+Xc2R2+9Xc2=4R2+4Xc29Xc2-4Xc2=4R2-R2

Find the ratio of the reactance to resistance by solving the obtained equation further.

5Xc2=3R2Xc2R2=35XcR=35x5=35

Hence, the value of x is 3.
