Solution

The correct option is C Ba
An alkaline earth metal (M) gives a salt with chlorine, which is insoluble in water at room temperature but soluble in boiling water. It also forms an insoluble sulphate whose mixture with a sulphide of a transition metal is called 'lithopone ' a white pigment. Metal M is Ba.
The salt with chlorine is barium chloride BaCl2.
The insoluble sulphate is barium sulphate BaSO4. Lithopone is an insoluble mixture of barium sulfate and zinc sulfide that precipitates upon mixing solutions of barium sulfide and zinc sulfate. The precipitate is recovered by filtration, then calcined (roasted) at temperatures above 600oC.
