Question

An aluminium rod (length l1 and coefficient of linear expansion αA) and a steel rod (length l2 and coefficient of linear expansion αB) are joined together. If the length of each rod increased by the same amount when their temperature are raised by tC, then l1/l2+1 is:

Solution

The correct option is B αB/αA+1
Increase in the length of aluminum be ΔLA=l1αAΔT
Increase in the length of steel be ΔLs=l2αBΔT
Given that ΔL1=ΔL2
So l1αA=l2αB
So l1l2=αBαA
So l2l1=αAαB
Adding 1 on both sides we get l2+l1l1=αA+αBαB
l1l1+l2=αBαB+αA
