Question

An aquarium has a depth of 20 cm, and it has a capacity of 40000 cm3. If 16 litres of water is added to the aquarium, how much height water is filled in this aquarium?

Solution

Capacity of the aquarium = length ✕ breadth ✕ height = 40000 cm3
Here, to find capacity the height is equal to depth.
So, length ✕ breadth ✕ 20 cm = 40000 cm3
i.e. length ✕ breadth = 40000 cm3/ 20 cm = 2000 cm2
Now, when 16 litres of water, it will fill upto some height in the aquarium.
Volume of water added to the aquarium = 16 litres = 16 ✕ 1000 cm3 = 16000 cm3
As, water takes the shape of container in which it is kept, the volume which it occupies will have same length and breadth as that of aquarium.
Water will be filled in the aquarium upto some height.
So, its length ✕ breadth ✕ height = 16000 cm3
We have already calculated, length ✕ breadth = 2000 cm3
So, height = 16000 cm3/2000 cm2 = 8 cm.
