An aqueous solution containing one mole of HgI2 and two moles of NaI is orange on colour. On addition of excess NaI, the solution becomes colourless. The orange colour reappears on the subsequent addition of NaOCl.

An aqueous solution containing one mole of HgI2 and two moles of NaI is orange on colour as Hgl2 is an orange coloured compound. On addition of excess NaI the solution becomes colourless as Hgl2 is consumed in the reaction.
