Question

An aqueous solution of a gas (X) gives the following reactions:
(i) It decolourises an acidified K2Cr2O7 solution.
(ii) On boiling with H2O2 and cooling it and then adding an aqueous solution of BaCl2, a ppt. insoluble in dilute HCl, is produced.
(iii) On passing H2S in the solution, white turbidity is formed.

Solution

The correct option is A SO2
The gas X is sulphur dioxide SO2.
It decolourizes acidified potassium dichromate solution. Sulphur dioxide is oxidized to sulphuric acid. Potassium dichromate is reduced to chromic sulphate. Orange colour of solution turns green.
3SO2+K2Cr2O7+H2SO4K2SO4+Cr2(SO4)3+H2O
When sulphur dioxide is boiled with hydrogen peroxide and cooled, sulphuric acid is obtained.
SO2+H2O2H2SO4
When barium chloride is added to sulphuric acid, a white ppt of barium sulphate is obtained which is insoluble in dil HCl.
H2SO4+BaCl2BaSO4+2HCl
On passing H2S in the solution, white turbidity is formed due to formation of S.
2H2S+SO22H2O+3S
