Question

An aqueous solution of NaCl is electrolyzed with an inert electrode. Write the equation for the reaction taking place at cathode and anode? What happens if NaNO3 is replaced with NaCl ?

Open in App
Solution

  1. During the electrolysis of Sodium chloride(NaCl ) chlorine gas is formed at Anode and Hydrogen gas is formed at Cathode.
  2. The reaction is,

Anode:2Cl-β†’Cl2(g)Chlorinegas+2e-Cathode:2H++2e-β†’H2(g)Hydrogengas

3. If Sodium chloride is replaced with NaNO3 the reaction changes to:

Anode:2OH-β†’H2O+12O2+2e-Cathode:2H++2e-β†’H2(g)
