Question

An artificial satellite is moving in a circular orbit of radius
42250 km. Calculate its speed if it takes 24 hours to revolve
around the earth.

Open in App
Solution

Here we have, Radius, r = 42250km
Time, t = 24 hours
Speed =?

We know that velocity =distance/ time =
( along a circular path,distance= circumference )
Velocity = circumference / time = 2πr / time. = 2πr / time

(Pi= 22/7= 3.14)

⇒v=2×(22/7)×42250 km / (24h)
⇒v=2×(22/7)×42250 km / (24h)
⇒v=2×22×42250 / (7×24 ) km/h. ⇒v=2×22×42250 / (7×24) km/h

⇒v=11065.47 km/h⇒ v=11065.47 km/h

Thus, speed of the given satellite =11065.47 km/h=3.073 km/s

( 24 hr= 24×60×60 s = 86400 s )
