Question

An athlete is given 100 g glucose of energy equivalent to 1560 kJ. He utilizes 50% of this gained energy in an event. Enthalpy of H2O for evaporation is 44kJmol1. In order to avoid storage of energy in the body, the mass of water (in g) he would need to perspire is _________.

Solution

The energy provided to the athlete by consuming 100 g glucose =1560kJ

Energy utilized in event =50100×1560=780kJ

Energy left as excess in body =1560780=780kJ

44 kJ energy needed to evaporate 18 g H2O

780 kJ energy needed to evaporate (18×780)44gH2O=319.09gH2O

Therefore, the athlete should perspire 319.09gH2O in order to avoid any storage of energy in the body.
