Question

An athlete is given 180 g of glucose (C6H12O6) He utilises 50% of the energy due to internal combustion in the body.In order to avoid storage of energy in the body.Calculate the mass of water he would need to perspire.Given enthalpy of combustion of glucose is 2800KJmol1

Solution

180g of glucose is equivalent to 2800kJ mole1 amount of energy.
But energy utilized =50100×2800=1400KJmole1
Energy to be given out as prespiration to avoid storage of energy =1400KJmol1
mass of water needed to prespire
=18ΔHvap×1400=1844×1400=572.7gm
