Let the distance between points X and Y be d.
Journey from X to Y : Speed v1=3m/s
Time taken t1=d3 ........(1)

Journey from Y to X : Speed v2=6m/s
Time taken t2=d6 ........(2)
Thus total time taken by athlete to run 2d distance t=d3+d6
Average speed =2dd3+d6=2×3×63+6=4m/s
