An athlete runs in straight line with average velocity of $3$ m/s for $4$ min and with an average velocity of $4$ for $3$ min. What is he average velocity during this time?

Solution

Displacement during first journey $S_{1} = 3 \times 4 \times 60 = 720 m$
Displacement during second journey $S_{2} = 4 \times 3 \times 60 = 720 m$
Total displacement $S = S_{1} + S_{2} = 1440 m$
Total time $t = (4 + 3) \times 60 = 420 s$
Average velocity $V_{a v g} = \frac{S}{t} = \frac{1440}{420} = 3.42 m / s$
