Solution

Atomic number: Atomic number of an element is equal to the number of protons present in the nucleus of atom of that element.

  • As number of protons = 12 (Given)
  • Therefore, Atomic number = 12

Mass number: Mass number of an element is equal to the number of nucleons (protons and neutrons) present in the atom.

Mass number = Number of protons+ Number of neutrons

  • Number of neutrons = 12 (Given)
  • Number of protons = 12 (Given)
  • On substitution, Mass number = 12 +12
  • Therefore, Mass number = 24

An atom has 12 protons, 12 electrons and 12 neutrons. Its mass number is 24 and atomic number is 12.
